Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how Ownfeed ("the App," "we," "us," or "our"), operated by Ownfeed, handles information in connection with your use of the App. By using Ownfeed, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with this policy, please do not use the App.
Information We Collect
We collect information in three general categories: (1) information you provide directly, such as when you create an account or interact with content; (2) information collected automatically as you use the App, such as engagement data used to personalize your feed; and (3) information received from third-party services you choose to use, such as signing in with a Google account. Each category is described below.
Information You Provide
- Account information. Ownfeed does not use passwords. You create an account and sign in with your Google account or, on iOS, with Sign in with Apple. As part of that sign-in process we receive your name and email address from Google or Apple (if you use Apple's private email relay, we receive the relay address instead of your real email address). We never receive your Google or Apple password.
- Profile photo. If you choose to add a profile or cover photo, the App lets you select an existing image from your device's photo library. This image is stored only on your device (in the App's local app data) and is not uploaded to or received by our servers. The App does not access your camera.
- Content and interactions. Information you provide when using the App's features, such as comments you post, and the interests you select (for example, during onboarding) to help personalize your feed.
Automatically Collected Information
- Engagement and interaction data. To personalize your feed, the App automatically records certain interactions with content, such as when a post is viewed, opened, scrolled past, liked, saved, commented on, or shared, along with related details like video watch duration/percentage, a session identifier, and timestamps. This information is used to calculate your interests and personalize the content shown to you.
- Sharing activity. When you use the share feature, we record which sharing channel you used (for example, WhatsApp, Facebook, copy link, or another app). We do not access your account or activity on those third-party platforms.
-
Device permissions. The App requests device storage access to let you select a profile or
cover photo from your photo library. The App's Android build also declares a microphone
(
RECORD_AUDIO) permission that is not currently exercised by any in-app feature. The App does not request camera or contacts permissions. If you choose to enable it, the App requests permission to access your device's approximate location, as described under Location Information below. - As of the date of this policy, the App does not use third-party analytics, advertising, or crash reporting SDKs, and does not collect device advertising identifiers.
Location Information
If you choose to enable it, Ownfeed collects your approximate location (rounded to about 1 km) while you are using the App, to support regional content and validation. We ask for your permission first, and we do not track your location in the background. Your approximate location is stored on our servers and is not sold or shared with advertisers.
Location is optional. You can choose "Not now", and you can change this at any time in Profile → Location preferences, including removing your saved location.
How We Use Information
- Provide, operate, and maintain the App's core functionality, including account creation and sign-in.
- Personalize the content feed shown to you based on your selected interests and engagement history.
- Enable you to interact with content — commenting, liking, saving, and sharing posts — and display those interactions to other users where applicable (for example, your display name next to a comment you post).
- Maintain the security and integrity of the App and prevent misuse.
Data Storage and Security
Account and content information described above is stored on our backend servers. Your authentication session is stored securely on your device using your device's secure storage facilities and is excluded from standard device backups. Engagement-interaction data is queued locally on your device before being sent to our servers.
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards designed to protect information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. However, no method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Data Retention
We retain account and content information for as long as your account remains active — there is no fixed expiration period. You may delete your account and data at any time from within the App, or request deletion by email; see our Account Deletion page for how. Engagement data used for feed personalization is retained for as long as necessary to generate accurate recommendations.
User Rights and Choices
- You may review and update certain account information directly within the App's profile settings.
- You may sign out of the App at any time, which clears your locally stored authentication session.
- Depending on your location, you may have additional rights under applicable data protection law — such as the right to access, correct, or delete your personal information — which you can exercise using the contact details below.
Account/Data Deletion
You can delete your account directly in the App: open the profile menu and choose "Delete account". Deletion is permanent and removes your account together with your interests, followed creators, location preferences, likes, saves, comments, and engagement history from our servers. If you cannot access the App, you can instead request deletion by email; see our Account Deletion page for the steps and what happens to your data.
Children's Privacy
Ownfeed is intended for use by adults and professional users. The App is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Third-Party Services
- Authentication provider (Clerk). We use Clerk to power account creation, sign-in (with Google and, on iOS, Apple), and session management. Clerk processes your name and email address on our behalf.
- Google Sign-In and Sign in with Apple. If you choose to sign in with your Google or Apple account, Google or Apple processes your account information as part of that sign-in flow, subject to Google's Privacy Policy or Apple's Privacy Policy.
- YouTube embedded player. Videos in the App are played using the YouTube embedded player. When you watch a video, YouTube (Google) may collect information about that playback in accordance with the Google Privacy Policy and the YouTube Terms of Service.
- AI feed-generation service (RunPod). Our backend uses RunPod, a third-party AI processing service, to generate and rank feed content. Only an internal user identifier and your ranked interest data are sent to this service for this purpose — your name, email address, and photos are not sent to it.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make changes, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any updates.
